I'm Peter Salvato. I design and build brand systems, and Joinery Studio is where I do it.
Joinery is the craft of making those meetings hold.
I grew up on construction sites. My father was a general superintendent for contractors in New York, and his job was holding the whole building in his head while fifty trades worked their part. I watched where the pieces met, because that's where things went wrong. Joinery is the craft of making those meetings hold.
I studied Visual Communication at the School of Visual Arts, under teachers including James Victore, Christoph Niemann and Nicholas Blechman. After that I laid out catalogs in publishing, where I learned hierarchy: where the eye goes first when there's too much on the page. Then I ran color separations at a screenprinting shop in Brooklyn, building each image one layer at a time, with the finished piece existing only in my head until the layers lined up.
I also taught special education in Brooklyn. Most of that job was reading each student: what they needed, and where the system asked more than they could give. I still start every project by reading the person on the other end.
For thirteen years I've built the front end of an enterprise recruiting platform: its design system, its code framework and its information architecture. That's long enough to see what happens to a system after launch, as the people who made the early decisions move on.
That's what I bring to your brand: a close read of where the pieces meet, and a system your team can keep running without me.
